2021-22: Research Skills Day

The SMSTC Research Skills Day will take place on Friday 19 November 2021.Please register at

The event is intended primarily for first-year PhD students, but PhD students at any stage are welcome to attend. It will be held principally online using Zoom, but a small number of places are available for students who wish to join in from ICMS in Edinburgh. Preference for these places will be given to those who have had fewer opportunities so far to meet other SMSTC students.

The provisional schedule is

10:00-10:15: Introduction: becoming a professional mathematician
10:15-10:45: Unexpected connections (Tom Leinster)
10:45-11:30: Public engagement and outreach (Francesca Iezzi)

11:30-12:00 Break/social session and Q&As

12:00-13:00: Career paths: within and outwith academia: panel session with

  • Kirsty Pringle (Society of Research Software Engineering)
  • Ian Sharpe (Heriot-Watt University)

13:00-13:45 Lunch and Q&As

13:45-13:55: Introduction: communicating mathematics
13:55-14:35: Finding information (David Pritchard)
14:35-15:15: Writing mathematics (Richard Scott)
15:15-15:55: Giving a mathematical talk (Ana Lecuona)
15:55-16:00: Round-up and goodbye

Refreshments will be provided at ICMS for the morning break but we are not able to provide lunch or cover travel expenses. Please talk to your department about these if you plan to attend in person.
