2025-26: Supporting Postgraduates Who Teach Mathematics and Statistics

Thursday 8th January 2026

Don’t miss out on this one-day, in-person only workshop facilitated by Prof Michael Grove & Dr Joseph Kyle (University of Birmingham) for postgraduate students who teach mathematics and statistics. It will take place on Thursday 8th January 2026 at the School of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Glasgow.

This workshop is a unique opportunity to discuss and learn teaching strategies with a professional of teaching mathematics. Moreover, it will give a networking opportunity (and a catch-up after the symposium!) to all maths and stats PhD students in Scotland.

The workshop will cover issues such as planning and preparing for teaching, facilitating problem solving classes, encouraging participation and providing support, and assessing student work and providing feedback.

Participants will have a chance to discuss any issues, challenges or concerns they may have in relation to their teaching duties, and to seek solutions both from fellow delegates and the session facilitators.

Registration in advance is essential for all attendees due to the limited number of places in the workshop and to ensure sufficient catering is available. Please register by 13.00 on Thursday 18th December 2025. You must be logged-in to the SMSTC website to access the 'SIGN UP' button on this page.

(Please note that although the workshop is free to current SMSTC students, we are unable to cover travel costs for participants. Those travelling from outside Glasgow to attend should talk to their local postgraduate coordinator about these expenses. If this were to become a problem, please let us know at admin@smstc.ac.uk )

Location: Room 311B, Maths & Stats Building, 132 University Place, University of Glasgow G12 8TA

Feedback from previous participants:

"Being able to discuss issues surrounding teaching as well as teaching practices in other institutions with my peers was reassuring and thought provoking."

"I found it very useful, both as a networking experience and a learning opportunity."

"(I) found the overall experience engaging. It was a good opportunity to discuss any issues or questions we had. The speakers were great at welcoming participation and ensuring that the things we discussed were tailored to our own experiences."
